Founders Statement

“Instead of thinking about what this art can bring you, focus on what you can bring to this art to make it the best it can possibly be.”

- Rick Rubin

The WGA and SAG strikes last year presented us all an opportunity to take stock and truly consider our place and purpose in the industry. In a time when the future was somewhat unclear, the thankful consequence for us was that our ‘why’ deepened, our gratitude for the artists we get to work alongside grew immensely and the process of shooting our first feature was rendered all the more poignant. Sometimes we forget that every film made is a tiny miracle and shooting Eternal Return felt no different.

As we progress into this new year and chapter, we do so in eager anticipation of all that is to come. The lessons to be learnt, the collaborations to pursue, the expansion of our team, and most excitingly, the extension of our Fund. Seeing those who are currently participating push themselves, develop and stride into new spaces as a result, has been and will ever be a cosmic gift.

At New Name, we want to make excellent things with excellent people. And I suppose as we continue, we want to do so whilst being mindful that this whole thing is made better when it's not about more for us, but more than us. Maybe that's the mantle for this next phase.

Our Team

What's the best way to unwind?

Definitely watching The Great British bake-off, or
Alvin Zhou’s YouTube channel. He basically takes his time cooking things and it’s so therapeutic to watch. I'd recommend ‘100 hour Tiramisu’.

What's your favourite childhood film?

The Parent Trap with Lindsey Lohan, I think
I could quote 75% of that movie.

When you were younger, what did
you want to be when you grew up?

Either an archaeologist, or a river dancer.
Random, I know.

What TV show did you binge watch most quickly?

3 seasons of Ru Paul’s Drag race in a couple of weeks. Its the best thing when I’m working and need to switch off!

JORDAN SPENCE, CO-FOUNDER

Jordan and his wife, Naomi Scott, founded New
Name Entertainment at the start of 2020.

Prior to New Name, Jordan worked as a professional footballer, playing for teams such as West Ham and several others up and down the English football ladder.

Although Production wasn’t his first career, he has always been interested in the power Film and TV hold, and how the ones he grew up watching helped him to navigate his feeling of belonging in institutions that were not always set up with him in mind.

Jordan is particularly interested in pursuing curiosities, something inherently ‘New Namey’, and pretending he discovered Ozone Emma Street.

What's your favourite childhood film?

High school Musical 2. Not just childhood.

In one word, how would you sum up the internet?

TK Maxx, is that 2?

What were the best and worst purchases you’ve ever made?

Crocheting under my alias, The Hackney Hooker. Essentially I’m promoting retirement activities in my 20s and I’m not angry at it.
